Deuout Christian meditacions and praiers to bee saied in the mornyng.

    IN the name of the
    father, and of the
    soonne, and of the
    holy ghost. Amen.
    Be ye watcheful
and pray, lest ye entre into temptacion.
    The spirite is willyng,
    but the fleshe is weake.

Bee ye watcheful. For ye knowe
not the day nor the houre in whiche
the soonne of man will come,
whether late in the eauentyde, or
at midnight, or at the cockecrowyng,
or in the daunyng of the
daie, leste if he come soodainly, he
    fynde you slepyng. But the
woordes that I saie, I saie vnto
    all folkes. Bee ye watchefull.
And take hede to your selues,

    A.i.

    1
leste at any tyme your hertes bee
    ouercomed with surfaictyng and
    drounkennesse, and cares of this
life, and so that same daie come
vpon you vnawares. For as a
snare shall it come on all theim
that dwell on the face of ye wholle
    yearth. Watche ye therfore continually,
    and praie, that ye maie
escape all these thinges that shall
come, and that ye maie stande before
    the soonne of man.
    For this
thyng, wete ye well, that in case ye
goodma~ of the house had knowe~
at what houre the theefe would
haue come, he would surely haue
watched, & would not haue suffered
his house to bee broken vp.
Therfore bee ye also readie. For
at suche an houre as ye thynke
not wil thee soonne of man come.
    Bee ye watchefull. For your

aduersarie ye deiuil as a roaryng

    what persone he maie deuoure,
whom resist ye stedfast in feith.
I Beleue in God the father
    almightie maker of heauen
and yearth, & in Iesus Christ his
    onely soonne our Lorde, whiche
was co~ceiued by the holy ghoste,
borne of the virgin Marie, suffered
    vnder Ponce Pilate, Was
    crucified, dead, and buiried, and
desce~ded into helle, And the third
daie he arose againe from death.
He asce~ded into heauen, & sitteth
on ye righthand of God the father
almightie. Fro~ there he shal cum
to iudge the quicke & the dead.
I beleue in the holy ghoste, the
    holy Catholike churche, The co~munion
    of sainctes, the forgeuenesse
of sinnes, the resurreccio~ of ye
body, & the life euerlasting. Ame~.
    3

    Te deum laudamus.

We praise the O God, we
knowlage thee to be ye lord.
    All the yearth doeth woorship
    thee the father euerlastyng.
To the al Angels crie aloude, ye
heauens & all the powers therin.
    To thee Cherubin, and Seraphin
    continually dooe crye.
Holy, holy, holy, Lorde God of
    Sabaoth.
    Heauen and yearth are replenished
with ye maiestie of thy glory.
    The glorious coumpaignie of
    the Apostles praise thee.
    The goodly felowship of the
    Prophetes praise thee.
    The noble armie of Martyrs
    praise thee.
    The holy churche throughout al
    the worlde doeth knowlage thee.
The father of an infinite maiestie.
    4
    Thy honourable, true, and onely
    soonne.
The holy ghost also beeyng the
    coumforter.
Thou art the kyng of glory O
    Christ.
    Thou art ye euerlastyng soonne
    of the father.
    Whan thou tookest vpon thee
to deliuer man, thou diddest not
    abhorre the virgins wombe.
    Whan thou haddest ouercomed
the sharpenesse of death, thou diddest
    open the kyngdome of heauen
    to all beleuers.
    Thou sittest on the righthande
of God in the glory of the father.
We beleue that thou shalt cum
    to bee our iudge.
We therfore praie thee, help thy
    seruauntes whom thou hast redemed
    with thy precious bloud.

    A.iii

    5
    Make theim to bee noumbred
with thy sainctes in glorie euerlastyng.
O Lorde saue thy people, and
    blisse thine heritage.
    Gouerne theim and lifte theim
    vp for euer.
Daie by daie we magnifie thee.
And we wurship thy name euer,
    worlde without ende.
    Uouchesalue O lorde to kepe
    vp this daie without synne.
Haue thou mercie vpon vs, O
Lorde haue thou mercie vpo~ vs.
Leat thy mercie lighten vpo~ vs
O lorde, as our trust is in thee.
In thee haue I trusted O lord,
    leat me neuer bee confounded.

Benedic anima mea dominu~. psal. ciii.

O My solle praise thou the
Lorde, and all that is within
    me praise his holy name.
    6
Praise the lorde O my solle, &
    forgeat not all his benefites.
    Whiche forgeueth al thy sinne,
    and healeth all thine infirmities.
Whiche saueth thy life from destruccion,
    and crouneth thee with
    mercie and louyng kyndnesse.
    Whiche satisfieth thy desire with
    good thinges, making thee yong
    and lustie as an eagle.
    The lorde executeth righteousnesse
    and iudgement, for al theim
    that are oppressed with wrong.
He shewed his waies vnto Moses,
    his weorkes vnto the childre~
    of Israel.
The lorde is full of compassion
    and mercie, long suffreyng, and
    full of great goodnesse.
He will not alwaie bee chyding,
neither kepeth he his angre for
    euer.

    A.iiii.

    7
He hath not delt with vs after
our synnes, nor rewarded vs accordyng
    to our wickednesse.
For looke how high the skye is
in comparison of the yearth, and
so great is his mercy also toward
    theim that feare him.
Looke how wyde the East is
from the west, and so ferre hath
he sette our sinnes from vs.
Yea like as a father pytieth his
owne children: euen so is the lord
    mercifull vnto theim that feare
    him.
For he knoweth wherof we bee
made, he remembreth that we are
    but dust.
The daies of manne are but as
grasse, for he flourisheth as a
    floure of the fielde.
For as soone as ye wynde goeth
ouer it, it is gon, & the place therof
    8
    shall knowe it nomore.
    But the mercifull goodnesse
of the Lorde endureth for euer &
euer, vpon theim that feare him,
    and his righteousnesse vpon the
    childres children. Euen vpon
    suche as kepe his couenaunte,
    and thinke vpo~ his co~maundementes
    to dooe theim.
    The Lorde hath prepared his
seate in heauen, & his kyngdome
    ruleth ouer all.
O praise the lorde ye Aungels
of his, ye that excelle in strength:
    ye that fulfil his co~mau~demente,
and herken vnto the voice of his
    woordes.
O praise the Lorde all ye his
hostes, ye seruauntes of his, that
    dooe his pleasure.
O speake good of the lorde al
ye weorkes of his, in al places of

    A.v.

    9
his dominion: O my solle praise
    thou the Lorde.

Glorie bee to the father, and to
the soonne, and to the holy ghost.
As it was in the beginnyng, &
is now, and euer shalbee worlde
    without ende. Amen.

    Antem.

    I Wyll alwaies geue thankes
vnto the lorde: his praise shall
euer bee in my mouth. My solle
shall make hir hoste in the Lorde
the humble shal heare therof and
bee glad. O praise ye ye lord with
me, & leat vs magnifie his name
    together.

    Uers.
Blissed bee the name of the
    Lorde.
    Auns.
    Fro~ this present
    houre for euer and euer.

    Let vs praie.

    O Lord God almightie whiche
    hast caused vs to come
vnto the beginnyng of this present
    10
    daie, preserue vs through
thy mightie power & graunt that
we maie not this daie falle or
swerue to any synne, nor incurre
any peril: but leat euerie our acte
    and dede bee continually directed
    to dooyng of thy righteousnesse
    through the gouernaunce & guiding
of thee, whiche in a perfeicte
trinitee of persones liuest & reignest
    one god without beginnyng
and for euer without ende. Ame~.
    ALl possible thankes that we
are hable we re~dre vnto thee
O Lorde Iesus Christe for that
thou hast willed this night past
to bee prosperous vnto vs, and
we beseche thee likewyse to prosper
all this same daie vnto vs, for
thy glorie and for the health of
our solle, & that thou whiche art
the true light not knowyng any
    11
goyng down, and whiche art the
    sunne eternal, geuyng life, foode,
    and gladnesse vnto all thynges,
vouchesafe to shine into our mindes,
that we maie not any where
stumble to fall into any synne,
but maie through thy good guidyng
    and co~ductyng come to the
    life euerlastyng. Amen.
    O Lord Iesus Christ, whiche
art the true sunne of ye world
    euermore arisyng and neuer goyng
    down, whiche by thy moste
    holsome apperyng & sight dooest
    bryng foorth, preserue, nourishe,
    and refreshe all thynges aswell
that are in heauen, as also that
are on yerth, we beseche thee mercifully
    and fauourably to shyne
into our hertes, that the night &
derkenesse of sinnes, & the mystes
of errours on euerie syde drieuen
    12
    awaie, thou brightly shynyng
within our hertes we maie al our
life space goe without any stumblyng
    or offense, & maie decently
and semely walke as in the daie
tyme beeyng pure and clene fro~
the weorkes of derkenesse, and aboundyng
    in all good weorkes
    whiche God hath prepaired for
vs to walke in, whiche with the
father and with the holy ghoste
liuest and reignest for euer and euer.
    Amen.
O God & lorde Iesus Christ,
    thou knowest, yea and hast
also taught vs how great the infirmitee
    and weakenesse of man
is, and how certain a thyng it is,
that it can nothing dooe without
thy godly help. If man trust to
himself it ca~not bee auoided, but
that he must headlong renne and
    13
    falle into a thousand vndoynges
& mischiefes. O our father haue
    thou pietie and compassion vpon
the weakenesse of vs thy children
Be thou prest & redie to helpe vs
    alwaies shewyng thy mercy vpo~
    vs, and prosperyng whatsoeuer
we godly goe about, so that thou
geuyng vs light we may se what
thynges are truely good in dede:
    thou encourageyng vs, we maie
haue an ernest desire to the same:
and thou beeyng our guyde we
may come where to obtein theim.
For we hauyng nothyng but mistrust
in our selues, dooe yelde &
committe our selfes full & wholle
    vnto thee alone, whiche weorkest
all thynges in al creatures to thy
honour and glorie. So be it.
O Our father whiche arte in
    heaue~ halowed be thy name
    Thy kyngdome come. Thy will
    14
be dooen in yearth as it is in heauen.
Geue vs this daie our daily
breade. And forgeue vs our trespaces,
    as we forgeue theim that
trespace against vs. And leat vs
not bee led into temptacion. But
deliuer vs from eiuil. For thyne
is the kyngdome, and the power
and the glorie for euer. Amen.
It is high tyme for vs now to
awake out of slepe. For now is
    our saluacion nerer, then afore
whan we beleued it to bee. The
night is passed, the daie is drawe~
nere. Leat vs therfore cast awaie
the dedes of derkenesse, & leat vs
putte on ye armour of light. Leat
vs walke honestly as it wer in ye
daie light, not in eatyng & drinking,
    neither in chaumbring and
    wantonnesse, neither in strife and
enuiyng, but putte ye on the lord
    Iesus Christ.
    15
And make not prouision for the
fleashe, to fulfyll ye lustes therof.

    The hymne.

    Iam lucis orto sydere.

    NOw that the cherefull daie
    doeth spryng.
Unto God praie we and syng,
That in all weorkes of the daie,
He preserue and kepe vs aye.
That our toungue he will refraine
From all strife and wordes vain
    Kepe our yies in couerture,
From all ill, and vain pleasure,
    That our hertes bee voided
    quite,
    From fantasie and fond delight,
Thinne dyet, of drynke & meate,
Of the fleashe to coole the heate.
    That whan the daie dooeth
    hence wend,
And the course, the night dooeth
    send,
    16
    By forbearyng thynges worldly
Our lorde god we may all glorifie.
Glorie bee vnto god ye father
And to his only so~ne together:
with ye holy gost our cumforter:
Bothe now and to the worldes
    ende for euer. Amen.
    Versicle.
    The woord becam flesh
    and dwelt emong vs.
Auns. And we haue seen the glorie
of it as the glorie of the onely
    soonne begotten of ye father,
    full of grace and trueth.

    Psalme.

BLissed be the lorde God of
    Israel: for he hath visited
    and redemed his people.
And hath lifted vp the home
of saluacion to vs, in the house
    of his seruaunt Dauid.

    B.i.

    17
As he spake by the mouth of
    his holy prophetes whiche haue
    been sithens the worlde began.
    That we shoulde bee saued
from our enemies, and from the
handes of all that hate vs.
    To perfourme ye mercie promised
to our fathers, and to remembre
    his holy couenante.

    To perfourme the othe whiche
he swore to our father Abraham
    that he would geue vs.
    That we beeyng deliuered
out of the handes of our enemies
    might serue hym wtout feare.
    In holynesse and righteousnesse
before hym all the daies of
    our life.
And thou childe shalt bee called
    the prophete of the highest,
for thou shalt goe before ye face
of ye lorde to prepare his waies.
    18
    To geue knowlage of saluacion
vnto his people for the remission
    of their synnes.
    Through the tendre mercie
of our god, wherby ye daie spring
from on high hath visited vs.
To geue light to theim that
sitte in derkenesse, and in the shadow
of death, and to guyde our
feete into the waie of peace.

Glorie bee to the father, and
to the soonne, & to the holy gost.
As it was in the beginnyng,
& now is, & euer shal bee, worlde
    without ende. Amen. Antem.
    THe goodnesse of God, and
    his loue towardes manne,
hath appered, not by the dedes
    of righteousnesse, whiche we
    had wrought, but accordyng to
his mercie he saued vs, by the
    fountaine of the newe byrthe,

    B.ii.

    19
and renuyng of the holy goste,
which he shed on vs abundantly
    through Iesus Christe oure
    salueour, that we beyng iustified
by his grace, should be made
heires accordyng to the hope of
    lyfe euerlasting.
    Vers.
    Cofirme the thing o God,
    that thou hast wrought towardes
    vs.
    Auns.
And visit thou vs, and defende
    vs in thy saluacion.

    Let vs pray.

O God whiche art the salueour
    & preseruer of al them
that attayne to lyfe, who wouldest
not the death of si~ners, nor
dooest reioyce in the castyng away
or lesyng of suche as go to
    deathe euerlastyng, we moste
    humbly beseche thee to graunt
    20
    vs forgeuenesse and perdon of
our sinnes: and geue vs grace
our sinnes past truly to repent
and bewaile, and the lyke from
    hensfoorth not to commit: that
whan the last daye of oure lyfe
    shall come, thy holy Aungels
    may receiue our solles purified
and cleansed from al sinne and
    wiekednesse: through our lorde
    Iesus Christe thy soonne, who
    liueth and reigneth God with
thee in the vnites of the holy
    ghoste, for euer and euer.
    Amen.

The voyce of the deuout Christian man to God.

    LOrde thou knowest all my
    desire: and my gronyng is
    not hydden from thee.

Euen as the wylde hart hath
a desyer to the water springes:

    B.iii.

    21
so longeth my solle after thee,
    o God.
I haue cryed with all my
wholle herte, heare me o lorde:
I will seke after thy statutes.
I haue called vnto thee, O
saue me: that I maie kepe thy
    commaundementes.
    Shewe me thy waies, O
    Lorde, and teache me perfeictly
    thy pathes.
Leade me foorth in thy trueth,
and teache me: for thou arte
God my salueour, and in thee
hath been my hope all the daie
    long.

The voyce of God vnto man.

    I wyll geue thee vnderstandyng,
    and instructe thee in
    this waie wherein thou shalte
goe: I shall fasten myne yies vpon
    thee.
    22
Bee not ye lyke to the horse
and ye mule, in whom is no vnderstandyng.

The voyce of man vnto God.

    WIth bytte and bridle holde
thou in ye chawes of theim
    that approche not nigh vnto
    thee.
My lippes shall fall to tha~kes
    geuyng, whan thou hast
    taught me thy statutes.

My solle shall liue & praise
    thee: and thy iudgementes shall
    help me.
    I haue goen astraigh euen
as a shepe that is loste: O seke
thou thy seruaunt, for thy commaundementes
    haue I not forgotten.

    O thynke vpon thy seruaunt

    B.iii.

    23
    as concernyng thy woorde, in
the whiche thou hast caused me
    to putte my trust.
Teache thou me the waie of
thy statutes o lorde: and I shall
alwaye searche it out with diligence.
I am thy seruaunt: O geue
    me vnderstandyng, that I may
    knowe thy testimonies.

The voyce of God vnto man.

THe lorde is swete and iust:
therfore will he geue a law
vnto theim that trespace in the
    waye.
    Theim that are ientil herted
wil he ordre right in iudgeme~t:
he wille teache the meeke his
    waies.
All the waies of the lorde are
mercy and trueth, to theim that
seke after his couenaunte & his
    24
    testimonies.
What man is he that feareth
the lorde? suche a man doeth he
teache in ye way whiche he hath
    chosen.
His solle shall dwell in good
thinges: and his seed shal inherite
    the yearth.
The lorde is a sure staighe
for them that fear hym: and his
    testament shall be declared vnto
    them.
    Blissed are the vndefyled
in the waye, euen they whiche
walke in the lawe of the lorde.
    Blissed are they that searche
out his testimonies & in al their
    herte dooe seke diligently after
    hym.
    For thei yt weorke iniquitee,
haue not walked in his waies.

what man is he that desireth

    B.v.

    25
life, & loueth to see good daies,
    Refreine thy toungue from
eiuill, and thy lyppes that thei
    speake no guyle.
    Turne awaie from eiuill, &
dooe good: seke after peace and
    folowe it.
The yies of the lorde are vpon
    the righteous: and his eares
    are toward their praiers.
    But the countenaunce of the
lorde is vpon theim that dooe
    eiuill, to destruie the memoriall
    of theim from the yearth.

    The Aungell of the lorde
    shall light round about theim
that feare hym, and shall deliuer
    theim.
Taste and see, for the lorde
is pleasaunt: blissed is the man
that putteth his trust in hym.
Feare the lorde all ye Sainctes
    26
of his: for there is no lacke
    to theim that feare hym.
    The riche haue lacked and
been hungrye: but thei that seke
after the lorde, shall not be destitute
    of euerie good thyng.
    The lorde kepeth all their
bones & there shall not one of
    theim bee bruised.
The death of synners is worst
of all: and thei that haue hated
    the righteous, shalbee guiltie.
    The lorde shall delyuer the
solles of his seruauntes: and as
many as put their trust in hym,
    shall not dooe amisse.
Blissed is the man that hath
not goen in the counsaill of the
    vngodly: and hath not stande
in the waie of sinners, and hath
not sitte in the chaire of pestilence.
    27
But his delite is in the law
of the lorde: and in his law will
he exercise hymself day & night.
And he shalbe as a tree that
is planted by the riuers of waters,
    whiche shal yelde his fruit
    in his due tyme.
And his leaf shall not fal awaie:
    and all thinges whatsoeuer
he shall take in hande, shall
    prosper.
So shal not ye vngodly dooe
they shall not dooe so: but they
shalbee euen as the dust which
the wynde drieueth from ye face
    of the yearth.
    Therefore dooe not the vngodly
    stande vp in iudgement,
    neither sinners in the counsaill
    of the righteous.
    For the lorde knoweth the
waie of the righteous: and the
    28
waie of the vngodly shal perish

Lorde who shal dwel in thy
tabernacle: or who shall rest in
    thy holy mount?
Euen he that entreth in with
    out blemishe, & weorketh righteousnesse.
    That speaketh trueth in his
herte: ye hath not medleed with
    deceipte in his toungue.
    Neither hath dooen his neybour
    harme: and hath receyued
    no slaunder agaynst his neyghbours.
The wieked is brought to no
reputacion in his sight: but he
maketh much of them that fear
    the lorde.
    whiche sweareth vnto his
    neighbour, and disappuincteth
hym not: whiche hath not geuen
    his moneye vnto vsurie, &
    29
hath taken no rewardes ouer ye
    innocent.
    Who so dooeth these thynges,
    shall not bee remoued foreuer.

The voyce of man vnto God.

THou art my porcio~ o lorde:
    I am determined to kepe
    thy lawe.
    I haue called myne owne
    waies to remembrau~ce: & haue
turned my feete into thi testimonies.
O how swete are thy woordes
    vnto my throt? yea more
swete the~ honey vnto my mouthe.
Leade me in the pathe of thy
    commaundementes, for yt haue
    I desired.
Bow thou my herte vnto thy
    testimonies and not vnto couetousnesse.
    O turne awaie myne yies,
    30
    leste thei beholde vanitie: quicken
    thou me in thy waie.
    Ordre my goynges after thy
    woorde: and leat no vnrighteousnesse
    haue rule of me.
    Ordre thou my goynges in
thy pathes, that my steppes be
    not moued.
    Shewe thy woondrefull mercies,
    yu that sauest theim, whiche
    putte theyr trust in thee.
Sette a watche o lorde, vnto
my mouth, and a dore of aduisement
    vnto my lippes.
Suffre not thou my herte to
enclyne vnto ye woordes of malice
    to cloke excuses in sinnes.
    Let my herte be vndefyled
in thy statutes, that I bee not
    confounded.
    Myne yies are alwaie looki~g
vnto the lorde: for he shal pluck
my feete out of the snare.
    31
why arte thou heauie o my
    solle, and whye disquietest thou
    me?
Putte thy trust in God: for I
wil yet geue thankes vnto him
he is the saluacion of my countenaunce,
    and is my god.
    Many saye vnto my solle:
there is no saluacion for it, in
    his god.
But thou o lorde art my defendour,
    my wurship, & the lyfter
    vp of my head.

The voyce of God vnto man.

    TArrye thou the lordes laysure,
    quite thyself manfully,
leat thyne herte be of good
    coumforte, and wayte thou still
    for the lorde.
    Tarrye thou the lordes laisure,
    and kepe thou his waie:
    32
and he shall exalte thee, that thou
maiest receiue the land by succession.
    Whan synners shalbee destruied,
    thou shalt see it.
Delite thou in the Lorde, and
he shal geue thee the peticions of
    thy heart.
Beleue in God, & he shal help
thee: ordre thy waie aright, and
putte thy trust in him, holde fast
    his feare and growe therin.
For God is tendre of loue and
    mercifull: and forgeueth synnes
in the daie of tribulacion: and is
    a defe~dour vnto al that dilige~tly
    seke him out in trueth.
Therfore come vnto me all ye
that are in painfull trauail and
are laden: and I will refresh you.
Take my yoke vpon you, & lerne
of me: for I am meke and lowly
in herte, and ye shal fynd rest vnto

    C.i.

    33
your solles: For my yoke is
    easie, and my burden light.

Glorie bee to the father, and to
the soonne, and to the holy ghost.
As it was in the beginnyng, &
is now, and euer shalbee worlde
    without ende. Amen. Antem.
    GEue not your selues ouer
vnto your old lustes by whiche
ye wer led, wha~ as yet ye wer
ignoraunt of Christe: but as he
whiche called you is holy, euen so
bee ye holy also in all manier of
    co~uersacion, because it is wryten:
Bee ye holy, for I am holy. And
if so bee that ye call on the father
    whiche without respecte of persones
    iudgeth accordyng to euerie
mannes weorke, see yt ye passe
the tyme of your pylgremage in
    feare. Forasmuche as ye knowe
how yt ye wer not redemed with
    34
    corruptible thynges as syluer &
    golde fro~ your vain co~uersacion
whiche ye had receiued by ye tradicion
of the fathers: but with the
precious bloud of Christ, as of a
    la~be vndefiled & without spotte.
    Uers.
O yt my waies wer ordreed
to the kepyng of thy statutes O
    lorde.
    Auns.
    Than shall I not
bee co~founded, whan I loke perfeictly
    in al thy co~maundeme~tes.

    Let vs praie.

    GRaciously heare vs O lorde
    our holy father beeyng almightiful
& eternal God: & al our
doynges direct thou in thy good
pleasure: that in the name of thy
derely beloued sonne, we maie be
worthy to abound in good weorkes.
    Than enkiendle thou our
reines & our herte with the fier of
thy holy spirit, that we may serue

    C.ii.

    35
thee with a chaste bodye, & please
    thee with our clene herte.
    Finally vouchesafe thou to sende
thy holy Angel from the heauens
that he maie kepe, nourishe, protecte
& defende all that abyde thy
mercie in this present life: whiche
    liuest and reignest God worlde
    without ende. Amen.
To calle to God in all our necessitee.

    The antem.

    ASke and it shalbee geuen
you. Seke & ye shal fynde:
knocke, & it shalbee opened vnto
    you. For whosoeuer asketh receiueth:
    & whosoeuer seketh findeth:
& to him that knocketh it shalbee
opened. If ye abyde in me, and
my woordes abyde in you: aske
what ye wil & it shalbe dooen for
    you.
Therfore if any of you lacke
wisedome, leat him aske of him
that geueth it, euen God whiche
    36
geueth to all men indiffe~re~tely, &
casteth no man in the teeth and
it shalbee geuen him. But leat
him aske in feith, and wauer not.
For he that doubteth, is lyke a
waue of the sea, whiche is tossed
of the wyndes, and carried with
    violence. Neither leat that man
thynke, that he shall receiue any
thyng of the Lorde. Ye aske also,
and receiue not, because ye aske
    amysse
: that is, to consume it vpo~
    your own lustes.
    But all thinges
whatsoeuer ye aske in praier if ye
beleue ye shal receiue theim. For
if ye, where ye are eiuil, can geue
    your children good giftes: how
muche more shal your father whiche
is in heauen, geue good thinges,
    if ye aske of him.
    Uers.
I will not breake my couenaunt:
    & the wordes that procede

    C.iii.

    37
out of my lippes will I not disanulle.

    Auns.
    Blissed bee the
lord for euermore, so be it, so be it.

    Let vs praie.

    O Lorde God our heauenly
    father, which hast willed vs
in suche wyse full & wholle to depe~de
    of thee, that yet neuerthelesse
    we shuld not through ouermuch
    carelesse securitee or slouthfulnes
bee vndiligente to knowe & to co~sider
    our owne necessitees: but although
    yea euen before we make
    our peticions, yu knowest ferre
better then our selfes what thing
is for euerie one of vs chiefely expedient
    or mooste wantyng, yet
suche good thynges as we haue
nede of, thou hast for this cause
    commaunded vs with instaunt
praier to desire accordyng to thy
wille, that we should as tha~kefull
    38
    children acknowelage & confesse
    fro~ whom all good thynges
dooe procede and come vnto vs:
    grau~t thou fauourably the praiers
of thy selie flocke: & where we
    dooe vnceassau~tly crie vnto thee,
    accomplishe thou our desire, that
whan we aske it, we maie obteine
thy mercie & grace: that whan we
seke for it, we maie fynd thy righteousnesse:
    & that to vs knocking
    vnceassauntely, the gate of the
    heauenly blisse and the entreyng
of the life euerlastyng maie bee
    opened through our lorde Iesus
    Christe. Amen.

Against ouermuche carefulnesse or desire of the worlde.

BE not ye careful for your life
what ye shall eat or drinke,
nor for your body, what raiment
    ye shall weare.

    C.iiii.

    39
For after all these thynges dooe
the gentiles seke. But your father
    knoweth that ye haue neede
of suche thinges. Whiche of you
with his thought taking ca~ adde
to his owne stature one cubite?
If ye than be not hable to dooe ye
thing whiche is lefte, why take ye
    thought for the other thynges?
But rather seke ye first the kingdome
    of God, and the righteousnesse
    therof: and all these thinges
    shalbee ministred vnto you. Is
not ye life more worth then meat?
and the body more of value then
    raymente? Beholde the foules of
the aier, for thei neither sowe nor
    reape, thei neither haue storehouse,
nor barne, & yet your heauenly
    father fedeth theim. How
muche are ye better then the foules?
    Considre the lilies of the
    40
fielde how they growe. They labour
    not, neither dooe thei spinne
And yet I saie vnto you that eue~
very Salomon in al his royaltee
was not arayed lyke one of these
. Wherfore if god so cloth ye grasse
of ye fielde whiche though it sta~d
to daie, is tomorowe cast into the
fornace shall he not muche more
do the same for you, O ye of lytle
feith? For your father of heauen
    taketh care for you.
    Uers.
The yies of al men looke
    vp vnto thee O lorde.
    Auns.
    And thou geuest theim
    their susteinaunce in due season.

    Let vs praie.

    We besech thee almightiful
    god, looke fauourably vpo~
    thy householde that through thy
    bountifulnesse, it maie bee well
gouerned in bodie, and thou preseruyng

    C.v.

    41
it, it maie safely bee fensed
    in solle.
O God the defendour of all
theim ye trust in thee, wtout
who~ nothi~g is strong, nothing is
    stable, nothyng is holy: multiplie
thi mercy vpo~ vs, yt thou beyng ye
    mocioner, thou beyng the gouernour,
    thou beyng the guyde, we
maie so passe by ye goodes of this
    worlde transitorie, that we maie
    not lese ye treasures euerlastyng.
    O Almightiful & euerlastyng
    God, geue vnto vs encreace
of feith, hope, and charitee: and
to the entent we maie the better atteigne
    the thinges that thou hast
promised, make vs to loue that
    thou hast co~maunded. Whiche
liuest and reignest God fro~ age
to age worlde without end. Ame~.

    For peace. Antem.

Lorde sende vs peace in our
    42
daies, for there is none other that
fighteth for vs, but onely thou O
    Lorde our God.
    Uers.
O lorde leat peace be made
    in thy mightie power.
    Auns.
    And
    abundaunce in thy towers.

    Let vs praie.

O God, from whom all holy
    desires, all good counsailles
& all iust weorkes dooe procede,
geue vnto vs thy seruau~tes that
same peace, whiche the world can
not geue: that our hertes beeyng
    obedient to thy co~maundeme~tes,
and the feare of our enemies take~
awaie, our tyme maie bee peaceable
    by thy proteccion through
    Christ our lorde. Amen.

    For our kyng. Antem.

LOrde in thy power shall the
    kyng reioyce: and vpon thy
    saluacion shall he triumphe excedyngly.
    Thou hast
    43
graunted him his hertes desire, &
hast not put him from the desire
of his lippes. For thou hast preuented
    him in the blissynges of
    swetenesse, thou hast sette vpon
his head a crowne of precious
stone. He asked life of thee and
thou gauest him ye le~gth of daies
for euer and euer. Great is his
glorie in thy saluacion: honour &
great wurship shalt thou laie vpon
    him. For thou shalt make
a verai blissyng of him for euer:
thou shalt make him glad in ioye
    with thy countenaunce. For the
king putteth his trust in ye lorde,
and in the mercie of the highest
    shall be he not myscarrye.
    Uers.
O lorde, saue thou ye kyng.
    Auns.
And heare vs on the daie
in whiche we calle vpon thee.
    44
GEue we beseche thee O god
    almightie vnto thy seruau~te
    Edward our kyng perfeict helth
of mynde and of bodye: that by
    stedfast cleuyng vnto well doynges,
he maie deserue to bee continually
    defended with the protection
    of thy almightifull arme,
    through Christ our lorde. Amen.

    For al christian kynges. Antem.

    ANd now ye kynges vnderstande,
    bee learned ye that
iudge the yearth: serue the lorde
in feare, and reioyce before him
    with tremblyng. Receiue i~struccion,
leste the lorde bee angrye, &
ye perishe from the right waie.
    Uers.
    The nacions shal feare thy
    name O lorde.
    Aunswer.
    And all kynges of the
    yearth shal drede thy glorie.
    45

    Let vs praie.

O God in whose hande are ye
    hertes of Kynges, and all
powers of men, & all the titles of
    realmes and kingdomes, whiche
art the co~forter of meke persones
the strength of the feithfull, and
the defe~dour of all suche as trust
in thee: cast thy fauourable and
tendre louyng yie on the realmes
    and dominions of all Christian
kinges, that thei maie receiue the
trueth of thy moste holy woorde,
enbrace the light & grace of thy
    ghospel, truely obserue and kepe
    thy co~maundementes, & thereby
    prosper, so gouernyng their people
& wynnyng theim to ye perfeccion
of a christian life, as maie be to ye
honour & glory of thy holy name
& to the co~foundyng of all suche
as are enemies to thee & thy most
    holy woorde, through our Lorde
    46
    Iesus Christe thy soonne, who
together with thee and the holy
    ghoste liueth and reigneth God
    worlde without ende. Amen.

    A praier against temptacion.

O Lorde Ies=9= Christe ye onely
staigh & fe~se of our mortal
state, our onely hope, our onely
    saluacio~, our victorie, our glorie,
& our triumphe, who in the fleshe
whiche yu haddest for our onely
cause take~ vpo~ the diddest suffre
thyself to bee te~pted of Satan, &
who onely & alone of all men diddest
    vtterly ouercome & va~quish
synne, death, ye worlde, ye deiuill, &
al ye kingdome of helle: & whatsoeuer
    thou hast so ouercomed, for
our behouf it is ye thou hast ouercomed
it: neither hath it been thy
wille to haue any of thy serua~tes
kepe battaill or fight wt any of ye
foresaied eiuils, but of purpose to
    47
reward vs wt a crowne of ye more
glorie for it, & to the entent yt thou
    mightest lykewyse ouerthrowe
Satan in thy membres, as thou
haddest afore dooen in thine own
person: geue thou we besech thee
vnto vs thy soldyers O Lyon
moste victorious of the tribe of
    Iuda strength against the roaryng
    Lyon, whiche continually
wa~dreeth to and fro sekyng who~
    he maie deuoure. Thou beeyng
that same serpente the true geuer
of helth and life that wer nailled
on high vpo~ a tree, geue vnto vs
thy lytell sely ones wylynesse against
    the deceiptefull awaityng
    of the moste subtile serpente.
Thou beeyng a lambe as whyte
as snowe, the vanquisher of Satans
    tyrannie, geue vnto vs thy
litell shepe the strength & vertue
    48
of thy spirite, that beyng in our
owne selues weake and feble, &
in thee strong and valiaunt, we
    maie withstande and ouercome
all assaultes of ye deiuill, so that
    oure ghostely enemie maie not
glorie on vs, but beeyng co~querours
    thorough thee, we maie
geue tha~kes to thy mercie, whiche
    neuer leaueth theim destitute
yt putte their trust in thee.
    who liuest and reignest God
    for euer without
    ende. Amen.

    D.

    49

Deuout psalmes and meditacions to bee vsed and saied in the euentyde.

A praier for remission of synnes and reconcisyng vs vnto God.

    O Moste high creatour
    & maker of all thinges
    whan I recoumpte &
    weigh with myself what manier
    a Maiestee I haue offended &
    displeased with my synnes, I
tremble & quake at myne owne
    vnaduised wilfulnesse: whan I
    consider how bounteous and liberal
    a father I haue forsaken,
    I deteste myne vnthankefulnesse:
    whan I marke from how
    blissefull and heauenly a libertee
of the spirite, into how miserable
    a bondage I haue vtterlye
    cast myself, I geue sentence
    of myne owne extreme madnes,
    & dooe vtterly altogether myslyke
    50
    myself, neither is there anythyng
    present before myne iyes
but helle fyer & desperacion by
    reason that thy iustice, whiche
no man maie escape, doeth cast
our conscience in suche fear &
drede: but on ye contrarie syde,
    whan I earnestly beholde that
    same botomeles & infinite mercie
    of thine, whiche accordyng
to ye testimonie of thy prophete
Dauid dooeth excede & passe al
thy other weorkes, & in shewi~g
of the whiche mercie thou art in
a manier greater then thy own
self & aboue thyself though otherwyse
thou art out of all co~parison
    on euerie behalf moste
greattest of all, whan I this co~sidre,
    a certain glad spirite and
    blast of hope coumfortably sheweth
    itself & refresheth my solle
    again.

    D.ii

    51
For why should I despaire to
    haue forgeuenesse of sinnes at
the handes of suche an one as
in the bookes of the prophetes
dooeth of his owne mere mocion
and good wille so often prouoke
    and stiere synners vnto repentaunce
    and emendemente,
    cryyng and openly protestyng
that he would not the deathe of
any sinner, but rather that the
    synner conuerte and liue? Besides
this, how prest and readie a
thyng perdone is with thee towardes
    suche as dooe emende,
    thy onely begotten soonne hath
    by many parables moste diligentely
    and plainly taught vs
to vnderstande: as by the parable
of the grote that was lost,
and by the parable of the shepe
yt was fou~d again, & broughte
    52
    home on the oweners shoulders
    from re~nyng a straigh, but
yet more euidently by the parable
    of ye prodigal soonne, whose
image and lyke facion I dooe
    vtterlye acknowelage and confesse
    in myself. I haue wiekedly
    forsaken a moste louyng father:
I haue after a moste vnthriftie
    sorte wasted and consumed all
    his substaunce in prodigalitee,
yt is to saie, al suche good qualitees
    and vertues, and giftes of
grace as he of his excedi~g bou~teousnesse
    endewed me with al,
    I haue wiekedly mispent, and
    whyle I folowe the inordinate
lustes of the fleashe, I haue forgotten
    thy co~maundementes, &
haue cast myself in a moste abominable
    bondage of all vice, &
so am brought to extreme nede

    D.iii.

    53
and penurie: neither dooe I see
whither to renne for refuge and
succour, but vnto thee O Lorde
from whom I so wilfully ra~ne
    awaie. Leat thy mercie receiue
    me again now moste humbly
    submittyng myself, whom all
this whyle that I haue goen astraigh
out of ye right waie thou
    hast ientilly & fauourably suffred.
    I am vnwoorthie to lifte
vp myne yies vnto thee, or to
call thee by the name of father.
    But I beseche thee vouchsalue
thou to bowe downe thine yies
vpon me. For the castyng down
of thyne yie causeth yt a synner,
though he wer dead, shal reuiue
again, and wheras he was lost,
he shall returne to his herte again.
    For euen this same verai
puincte that I dooe now myslyke
    54
my self, I maie thanke thy
looking vpon me for it: wheras
    I was wandreyng astraigh fer
    from thee, thou diddest vouchesalue
to cast thyne yie vpon me,
    and diddest restore myne yies
vnto me again, that I might
bee hable to see in how greate
euils I lay drouned. Thou shewedst
    thyself vnto me, & diddest
through thy holy spirit geue me
    bothe a remembraunce & consideracion,
and also a desire of ye
state of innocencie which I had
    wilfully forsaken and geuen ouer.
I dooe not now desire to be
enbraced and kyssed of thee forasmuche
    as I am a bondeseruaunte
    woorthie of all extreme
    punishment: I doe not require
a long robe or honest vesture &
a ryng being tokens & cognoisaunces
    of my former dignitie,
    55
    whiche tokens I did wilfully
cast awaie from me: I dooe not
praie thee to receiue me again
vnto the honour of thy dere beloued
    soonnes and children: it
shall be enough & with the largest
for suche an one as I am, if
    thou admitte me emongst thy
    bonde seruauntes of the lowest
and bassest degree that is, suche
as haue ye markes of renawaies,
and suche as haue been recouered
    again after thei haue ren
awaie, so that I maie yet at lest
wyse bee as a poore hanger on
in one place or other emong thy
seruau~tes. For in thy house bee
    many mansions and many roumes.
It shall not grieue me in
this lyfe to be rekoned and estemed
    emong the moste abiecte
sorte, to be tormented with extreme
    56
    penaunce & punishmente
    to be altogether ouglie beseen
    with wepyng and mournyng:
so that I maie not foreuermore
    bee separated, debarred, & shut
out from thy presence. I beseche
thee O Lorde for the deathes
sake of thy only begotten soone
    whome thou louest, geue vnto
me thy spirit, whiche maie purifie
and clense my herte, & maie
confirme it with his grace, that
I maie not any more here after
falle again into the same pitte
    through myne vnaduised foly,
out of the whiche I haue
    been called home again
    to grace,
    by thyne
    excedyng great grace
    and mercie.
    Amen.
    57
    COnuerte vs God
    our salueour, and
    turne thy wrathe awaie
    from vs.
    O God make yu
    spede to help me.
Lord make haste to succour me.
Glorie to the father and to. &c.
As it was in the begynnyng
    and now. &c. Amen.
VNto thee o lorde, haue I
lifte vp my solle: my God
I trust in thee, leat me not be ashamed.
    Neither leat myne enemies
laugh me to scorne: for all they
that hope in thee shall not bee
    confounded.
    Leat all suche bee confounded
    as take wieked thynges in
    hande, and that in vain.
Shewe me thy waies o lorde
    58
and teache me perfeictly thy pathes.
Leade me in thy trueth, and
teache me, for thou art God my
salueour, and in thee haue I hoped
    al the daie long.
    Call to remembraunce o lorde
thy tendre mercies, and thy louyng
    kyndenesse whiche haue
    been euer of olde.
    Remembre not thou ye faultes
of my youth and myne ignoraunces.
    Accordyng to thy mercie thinke
vpon me o lorde for thy goodnesse
    sake.
The lorde is swete and iust:
therefore wil he geue a law vnto
theim yt trespace in the waie.
    Theim that are ientill hewed
wil he ordre right in iudgement
he wil teache ye meke his waies
    59
All the wayes of the lorde are
mercie and trueth, to theim that
seke after his couenaunte & his
    testimonie.
For thy names sake o lorde
thou shalt be mercifull vnto my
    synne: for it is muche.
what man is he that feareth
the lorde? hym dooeth he teache
in the waie whiche he hath chosen.
His solle shall dwell in good
thynges: and his sede shall inherite
    the yearth.
The lorde is a sure staighe
for theim that feare hym: & his
    testamente shalbee declared vnto
    theim.
    Myne yies are alwaie lookyng
vnto the lorde: for he shall
plucke my fete out of the snare.
    Haue respecte vnto me, and
    60
pitie me: for I am desolate and
    poore.
    The troubles of my herte
    are encreaced: deliuer thou me
    out of these my necessitees.
    Consider my lowe estate and
trauaill: and forgeue me all my
    trespaces.
    Looke vpon myne enemies
for thei are encreaced: and with
a cruel hate haue thei hated me.
    Preserue thou my solle: and
deliuer me: leat me not be confou~ded:
for my trust haue I put
    in thee.
    The innocente and righteous
    haue ioned theimselues
vnto me: because I haue put my
    trust in thee.
    Deliuer Israel O God: out
    of all their troubles.
Glorie bee to the father: & to
    61
the soonne, & to the holy ghoste.
As it was in the begynnyng
and now is and euer shall bee:
    worlde without ende. Amen.
    HOw long wilt thou forget
me o lorde? for euer? how
long turnest thou thy face awai
    from me?
How long shall I seke cou~sail
in my solle abydyng woe in
my herte all the daie long?
    How long shall myne enemie
    bee exalted aboue me? consider
and heare me o lorde my God.
    Lighten thou myne yies that
I neuer fall on slepe in death,
leste at any tyme myne enemie
    saie: I haue preuailled against
    hym.
    They that trouble me wyll
be glad if I bee cast down: neuerthelesse
    I haue put my trust
    62
    in thy mercie.
My herte shall reioyce in thy
saluacion: I will syng vnto the
    Lorde, whiche hath geuen me
good thynges, and I wyl praise
the name of the lorde the moste
    highest.
Glorie bee to the father, & to
the soonne, & to the holy ghoste.
As it was in the beginnyng
and nowe is, and euer shall bee,
    worlde without ende. Amen.
IN thee O Lord haue I putte
my trust, leat me not bee confounded
    foreuer: delyuer thou
    me in thy righteousnesse.
    Bow down thyne eare vnto
me: haste thee to delyuer me.
Bee thou vnto me a God, a
defendour: and a house of refuge
    that thou maiest saue me.
    63
For thou art my strengthe &
my refuge: and for thy names
sake shalt thou leade me foorth
    and nourishe me.
Thou shalt bryng me out fro~
the snare that thei haue priuelye
laied for me: for thou art my defendour.
    Into thy handes I co~mende
    my spirite: thou hast redeemed
me O Lorde the God of trueth.
Lorde how great is the multitude
    of thy swetenesse, whiche
thou hast laied vp in store for
    theim that feare thee.
    Thou hast kept couenaunte
with theim that trust in thee, euen
in the sight of the children of
    men.
Thou shalt hyde theim in the
priue place of thy prese~ce, from
    the vexacion of men.
    64
    In thine owne tabernacle shalt
thou defende theim from the striuyng
    of toungues.
Blissed bee the lorde, for he hath
    woonderfully shewed his mercie
vnto me in a strong fensed citee.
I saied in ye excesse of my minde:
I am cast out from the sight of
    thyne yies.
    Therefore hast thou heard the
voice of my praier, while I cryed
    vnto thee.
O loue the lorde all ye his sainctes:
for the Lorde will require ye
    trueth, and plentiously rewarde
    theim that bee proude dooers.
    Quyte your selues manfully, &
leat your herte be of good coumforte,
all ye that putte your trust
    in the Lorde.
Glorie bee to the father, & to the
soonne, and to the holy ghoste.

    E.i.

    65
As it was in the beginnyng. &c.
    WHo so dwelleth within the
    helpe of the moste highest,
shall remaine in the proteccion of
    the god of heauen.
He shall saie vnto the lord, thou
art my defe~dour, and my refuge,
my God and my trust shalbee in
    him.
For he hath deliuered me from
the snare of the hunters, and fro~
    the sharp sweorde.
With his wynges hath he ouer
shadowed thee: and vnder his fethers
    shalt thou putte thy trust.
    His trueth shalbee round about
thee for a shielde: yu shalt not bee
afraied for any feare in ye night.
For the arowe flighyng in the
daie tyme, for any buisinesse that
walketh in derkenesse, for any violence
& deiuil of the noone daie.
A thousand shal fall at thy side,
    66
and tenne thousand on thy right
hand: but it shall not drawe nigh
    vnto thee.
Yet shalt thou beholde wt thyne
yies, & see the rewarde of sinners.
For thou lorde art my hope: thy
house of defense hast thou sette
    moste high of all.
There shall no harme come to
thee: & the scourge shal not drawe
    nigh vnto thy tabernacle.
For he hath geuen charge vnto
    his Aungels concernyng thee, to
kepe thee in all thy waies.
In their handes shal they beare
thee, lest thou hurte thy foote against
    a stone.
Thou shalt goe vpon the adder
and noisome serpent: & shalt trede
down the Lyon, & the draguon.
Because he hath putte his trust
in me, I shall deliuer him: I shal

    E.ii.

    67
defende him because he hath knowen
    my name.
He hath cryed vnto me, and I
shal heare him: I am with him in
his trouble: I shall deliuer him &
    bryng him to honour.
With length of daies shall I
endue him: and I will shewe him
    my saluacion.
Glorie bee to the father, and to
the soonne, and to the holy ghost.
As it was in the beginnyng. &c.
    BEholde, now praise ye Lord,
al ye ye seruau~tes of the lord.
Ye that stande in the house of
the Lorde, in the courtes of the
    house of our God.
O lifte vp your ha~des towardes
the sa~ctuarie in the night seasons:
    and praise ye the Lorde.
The lorde that made heauen &
yearth, blisse thee out of Syon.
    68
Glorie be to the father. &c.
    As it was. &c. Amen.

    The antem.

    My brethren be strong through
the Lorde, and through ye power
of his might. Putte on all the
armour of god, that ye maie sta~d
against the assaultes of ye deiuil.
For we wrastle not against bloud
    and fleashe: but agaynst rewle,
    against power, agaynst worldely
    rewlers, euen gouernours of the
    derkenesse of this worlde, against
    spirituall craftinesse in heauenly
    thynges. Wherefore take vnto
you the wholle armoure of God,
that ye maie bee hable to resist in
the eiuil daie, and stande perfeict
in all thynges. Stande ye therefore,
and your loynes girt with ye
the trueth, hauyng on the brest
    plate of righteousnesse, & hauyng

    E.iii.

shooes on your feete, that ye may
bee prepared for the ghospell of
peace. Aboue all, take to you the
shielde of feith, wherwith ye may
quenche al the fyrie dartes of the
    wieked. And aboue all thynges
take the helmet of saluacion, and
the sweorde of the spirite, whiche
is the woorde of God. And praie
ye alwaies wt al manier of praier
and supplicacion in the spirite: &
    watche thervnto wt all instaunce
    and supplicacion.

    The Chaptour.

    ANd God is feithfull, which
shall not suffre you to bee
    tempted aboue your stre~gth: but
shal in the middes of the temptacion
make a waie, that ye maie be
hable to beare it. For the lorde
knoweth how to deliuer ye godly
    70
out of temptacio~, & to reserue the
vniust vnto the daie of iudgemente
    for to bee punished. Therfore
my brethren coumpt it for an
excedyng ioye, whan ye fall into
    diuerse temptacions: knowyng
this, that the triyng of your feith
    enge~dreeth pacience: and leat pacience
    haue hir perfeicte weorke,
that ye maie be perfeicte & sound
    to lacke nothyng.

    The hymne.

    O Lord the worldes salueour
    Whiche hast preserued vs
    this daie:
This night also bee our succour,
And saue vs euer, we thee praie.
    Bee mercifull now vnto vs,
And spare vs whiche dooe praie
    to thee:

    E.iiii.

    71
    Our sinne forgeue lord gracious
    And lightened mought our derknesse
    bee:
    That slepe our myndes dooe
    not oppresse,
Nor that our enemie vs beguile:
Nor that the fleashe full of frailnesse,
Our solle and bodye dooe defile.
O lorde reformer of all thyng
With hertes desire we praie to
    thee,
That after our rest and slepyng.
We maie rise vp chaste, & woorship
    thee.
Glorie be vnto god the father,
And to his onely sonne together,
With the holy ghoste our coumforter
Both now & to the worldes ende.
    for euer. Amen.
    Uers.
    Kepe vs O lorde:
    72
    Auns.
Euen as the balle of the
yie defende vs vnder the shadow
    of thy wynges.
    LOrde, now lettest thou thy
    seruaunte departe in peace,
    accordyng to thy promise.
For myne yies haue seen thy saluacion.
    Whiche thou hast prepared before
    the face of all people.
A light to lighten the gentiles,
and the glorie of thy people Israel.

Glorie bee to the father, and to
the soonne and to the holy ghost.
As it was in the beginnyng, &
now is, and euer shalbee worlde
    without ende. Amen.

    The antem.

SHewe vs O Lorde thy light,
    that we beyng deliuered from
the derkenesse of our hertes, may

    E.v.

    73
come to the verai light whiche is
Christ. And thou O lorde preserue
vs while we bee wakyng, &
kepe vs whyle we bee slepyng, ye
we maye awake with Christ, and
    take rest in peace.
    Lorde haue mercie on vs.
    Christ haue mercie on vs.
    Lorde haue mercie on vs.
Our father whiche art in heauen. &c.
And leat vs not bee led into te~ptacion.
But deliuer vs from all eiuil.
Blisse we the father, ye soonne
& the holy ghoste: praise we him,
    and exalte him for euermore.
Blissed arte thou Lorde in the
    firmamente of heauen: thou arte
    praise worthie, glorious, and exalted,
    without ende.
    O God, thou beeyng conuerted
    74
shalt geue vs life: & thy people
    shall reioyce in thee.
O Lorde shewe vnto vs thy
mercie: and geue vnto vs thy saluacion.
And leat thy mercy come vpo~
    vs O lorde.
    And thy saluacion accordyng
to the promise of thy woorde.
We haue synned wt our fathers:
    We haue doen vnrighteously,
    & iniquitie haue we wrought.
O lorde, dooe not vnto vs accordyng
    to our synnes:
    Nor rewarde thou vs accordyng
    to our iniquitees.
    O Lorde, vouchesafe thou to
preserue vs this night fro~ synne:
Haue mercie vpo~ vs O lord,
    haue mercie vpon vs.
O lorde leat thy mercie lighte~
    vpon vs:
    75
As our trust is in thee.
    O lorde heare my praier.
And leat my crie come vnto thee.

    Let vs praie.

O Lord God, we beseche thee
    to lighten our darkenesse:
& deliuer vs from the daungiers
of this night, O mercifull lorde.
    Through our lord Iesus Christ
    Amen.

    For peace. Antem.

Lord sende vs peace in our
daies, for there is none other that
fighteth for vs, but onely thou O
    Lorde our God.
    Uers.
O lorde leat peace be made
    in thy mightie power.
    Auns.
    And
    aboundaunce in thy towers.

    Let vs praie.

O God, from whom all holy
    desires, all good counsailles
& all iust weorkes dooe procede,
    76
geue vnto vs thy seruau~tes that
same peace, whiche the world can
not geue: that our hertes beeyng
    obedient to thy co~maundeme~tes,
and the feare of our enemies take~
awaie, our tyme maie bee peaceable
    by thy proteccion through
    Christ our lorde. Amen.

    For our kyng. Antem.

I Haue founde Dauid my seruaunt,
    with my holy oyle haue
I enoyncted him. For my hande
shall help him, & myne arme shall
    stre~gthen him. The enemie shall
nothyng preuail in him, and the
childe of iniquitee shall not take
in ha~d to hurte him. His enemies
also shall I smyte downe before
his face, and turne them to flight
that hate him. Both my trueth &
my mercie shalbee with him, and
in my name shall his horne be exalted.
    77
    Uers.
    O lord saue our kyng.
    Auns.
And heare vs on that daie
in whiche we call vpon thee.

    Let vs praie.

We beseche thee O God almightie
    that thy seruaunte
Edwarde our kyng, who by thy
great mercie towarde vs hath receiued
    the gouernaunce of this
    realme, maie also receiue encreace
    of all manier vertues, wherewith
    beyng comely endued and garnished,
he maie eschewe ye depe pitte
of vice, haue victorie of his enemies
    bothe visible and inuisible,
    enioye perfeicte and long health
of body, & maie finally bee found
    acceptable to come vnto thee,
whiche art the waie, the trueth, &
the life, through our lorde Iesus
    Christ. Amen.

A praier to bee saied at night whan we laie vs down to rest.

    78
    O Lorde Iesus Christe whose
    botomelesse gratuitee we
haue to tha~ke for all thi~ges, who
hast geuen the mooste clere light
of the daie tyme aswell to ye good
as to the eiuil to goe about suche
affaires & buisinesse as we haue
to dooe, & hast mercifully geuen
the louely silence of the night for
the strength of our weake & feble
bodies to be refreshed with liyng
at rest, & to putte awaie the carefulnesse
    of our myndes, and for
    the asswageyng of our heartes
sorowes, wheras to al theim that
loue thee, thou thyself doest much
    better acco~plishe & perfourme all
these thynges within in the hertes,
    to who~ towardes all dueties
and actes of godly co~uersacion, yu
dooest for their feith sake muche
    more clerely shewe the lanterne
    79
of thy light, then ye sunne shyneth
bright vnto the worlde, & whom
thy promises dooe not suffre at any
tyme to weaxe werie: the coumforte
    and co~solacion of thy spirite
    dooeth muche more effectually
washe awaie al heauines of herte
then dooeth the slepe of the body,
so that, the wholle ma~ dooeth not

shall growe vpon vs out of the
whiche we shall not awake vntil
suche tyme as at the Aungels
    troumpette euen the dead also
shall bee reised: we beseche thee
that thou wilt at that tyme lighten
the yies of our solles: so that
our feith maie not than bee extinguished
    and we slepe in euerlastyng
    death: but contrarie wise

    F

    81
that we maie peaceably reste in

O God, whose nature & propertie

    ALmighty and euerliuyng

We beseche the O lorde to

A prayer for obtayning of wisdome. Sapi. ix.

    GOD of oure fathers and
    Lorde of mercy, thou that
hast made all thinges with thy
    woorde and ordeyned man thorough
    thy wysedome, that he
    should haue dominion ouer the
    creature which thou hast made
that he shoulde order the world
    accordyng to equitie & righteousnes,
    and execute iudgement
with a true heart: geue me wisdome
    whiche is euer about thy
seat: & put me not out fro~ amo~g
thy children: for I thy seruaunt
    and sonne of thy handemayde
am a feble person, of a shorte
tyme: and to young to the vnderstandyng
    of thy iudgement
and lawes: yea though a man
    96
be neuer so perfecte among the
chyldren of men, yet yf thy wisdome
be not with hym, he shall
be nothyng wurth. Oh send thy
wysedome oute of thy holy heauens
and from the throne of thy
maiestie, that she maie bee with
me, and labour with me, that I
    may knowe what is acceptable
in thy sighte, for she knoweth &
    vnderstandeth all thynges, and
she shall conduct me right soberlye
in my workes & preserue me
in her power. So shall my workes
    be acceptable. Amen.

    A prayer agaynst worldly carefulnesse.

O Moste dere and tender father,
    oure defendoure and
    nowrissher, indue vs with thy
grace, that we maye cast of the
    great blyndnes of our myndes

    G.iii.

    97
    and carefulnes of worldly thinges,
and may put our whole study
and care in kepyng of thy holy
lawe. And that we may labour
    and trauayle for oure necessities
in this lyfe, lyke the byrdes of
the ayer, & the lillies of the fielde
without care. For thou hast promysed
to be carefull for vs, and
    hast commaunded that vpon the
we should cast al our care, which
    lyuest and reignest worlde without
    ende. Amen.

A prayer to be sayed at the houre of deathe.

O Lorde Iesu, whiche art the
only healthe of all men lyuyng,
    and the euerlastynge lyfe
of them whiche dye in faythe, I
    wretched synner geue and submytte
    my selfe whollye vnto thy
    98
most blessed wyll. And I beyng
sure that the thyng can not peryshe
    whiche is committed vnto
    thy mercye, wyllynglye nowe I
leue this frayle and wicked flesh,
in hope of the resurreccion whiche
in better wise shall restore it
to me againe. I beseche the most
    mercifull lorde Iesu Christ, that
thou wylte by thy grace, make
strong my soule against al temptacions,
    and that thou wilte couer
& defende me with the buckeler
of thy mercye agaynst all the
assaultes of the deuill. I see and
knoweledge that there is in my
selfe no helpe of saluacion, but al
    my confidence, hope, and truste
is in thy most merciful goodnes.
I haue no merytes, nor good
    woorkes whiche I maye aledge
before the: Of synnes and euyl
    99
wurkes alas I se a gret heap
but throughe thy mercy I trust
to be in the numbre of them, to
who~ thou wilt not impute their
sinnes, but take and accept me
for righteous & iuste, and to be
    the inheritour of euerlastynge
    lyfe. Thou mercyful lorde wert
borne for my sake: thou dyddest
    suffer bothe hunger and thirste
for my sake: thou diddest preche
and teache, thou diddest pray &
fast for my sake: thou diddest al
good workes and dedes for my
    sake, thou sufferedst moste grieuouse
    paynes & tormentes for
my sake: And finallye thou gauest
    thy moste precious body to
dye, and thy bloud to be shed on
ye crosse for my sake. Nowe most
    mercifull sauiour, let all these
    thynges profyt me, which thou
    100
frelye hast geuen me, that hast
geuen thy selfe for me: Let thy
    bloud clense, and washe awaye
the spottes and foulenes of my
    sinnes. Let thy righteousnesse
    hyde & couer my vnrighteousnes.
Let the merites of thy passion
    and bloud be the satisfaccion
for my sinnes. Geue me lord
thy grace that my faith and saluacion
    in thy bloud wauer not
in me, but euer be firme & constant,
that the hope of thy mercye
    and lyfe euerlastyng neuer
decay in me, that charitie waxe
not colde in me: finally that the
weaknes of my fleash be not ouercome
    with the fear of death.
    Graunt me mercyfull sauiour,
that when deathe hath shut vp
the iyes of my bodye, yet that ye
iyes of my soule maye styll beholde
    101
    and loke vpon thee, that
    when deathe hath taken away
the vse of my tonge and speche,
yet that my heart maye cry and
saye vnto the: In manus tuas domine,
    commendo spiritum meum
    , that is to
saie: O lorde into thy handes I
geue and commit my soule. Domine
    Iesu accipe spiritum meum.
    Lorde
Iesu receiue my soule vnto the.
    Amen.

A prayer for the kepyng of a good name.

    THat wise man whiche was
priuie of thy secretes o heuenly
    father taught vs that an
honest name is a treasure right
    precious, when he sayth: Better
it is to haue a good name then
    precious ointmentes. But this
so excellent and good thing we
nether can get nor kepe, but by
    102
thy ayde and helpe. Nowe surely
the wel and fountayne of a good
name, is a faultlesse lyfe. This
    therfore in especiall we demau~de
and craue of thee, O Lorde almightie,
    yet neuertheles for as
    muche as often tymes innocency
& faultles liuing is not inough,
nether yet a sure buckler and defence,
    namely agaynste suche as
vnder theyr lippes beare the poyson
of serpentes: yea, and oft tymes
    it happeneth that when we
suppose to be amonges our trustye
    frendes, we dwell with Ezechiel
    emong scorpions and venemous
    serpentes, we cry with thy
    holye prophete: O lorde delyuer
my soule from wicked lyppes, &
a gylefull tong, but yf neuerthelesse
it be seen to thy goodnes to
    exercise thy seruauntes also with
    103
this affliccion: to the intent they
maye better be brought to godlynes
    & perfeccion: Graunt we
the praye that with Paule thy
    moste valiaunt Champion, we
maye by reproche and glory, by
    infamye and good name, abyde
    styll in thy commaundementes
    through Iesu Christe, whiche
also hym selfe when he walked
here in earth was reuiled, slau~dered,
    euil spoken of, and called
    to his teeth a Samaritane,
    a wyne drinker, a
    deceyuer of ye people,
    & one that had the
    deuil. The same
    now
    reigneth with the in glory
    together with the
    holy gost.
    Amen.
